Crawshay’s Rugby Club are delighted to announce the appointment of Jonathan Westwood to the position of Crawshay’s Rugby Manager.
Jonathan is a former Crawshay player having toured France twice in the early 1990s which he achieved as part of a first class rugby playing career with Newbridge, Newport, Neath and Cardiff, having achieved Welsh Youth, Wales U21s, Wales Squad and Monmouthshire representative honours.
Westwood continued his rugby career on the coaching side at Abercarn, Newbridge and Cross Keys. Jonathan then returned to Cross Keys as Director of Rugby, spearheading the Club’s greatest achievements in the modern era, winning the Welsh Cup and getting to the final of the British and Irish Cup and the Principality Premiership.
Jonathan also brings to the Crawshay’s Rugby Club and it’s operations a wealth of commercial experience having worked as a Strategic Account Manager for the global brand Heineken and now as Head of Commercial to the professional rugby region, the Dragons.
Jonathan will have a remit of all of the rugby operations of the Club, specifically working alongside Ian Brice, selecting and running the Senior XV, with a view to assuming overall responsibility for this when the timing is opportune.
Commenting on his appointment, Jonathan stated ‘Having met key members of the Crawshay’s committee I was impressed with their new vision and the early plans they have for their international tours over the next few years, leading into their centenary year in 2022. Having such fond memories of my Crawshay’s tours, coupled with my knowledge of the modern rugby industry and landscape I felt I could really add to this vision and turn it into a reality. I’m really proud and honoured to take up this role.’
Crawshay’s Club Secretary, Will Thomas, commented on the key appointment ‘This is an excellent appointment for the Club. Jonathan’s experience in and of Welsh rugby is extensive and he will be key in getting over the line the exciting tour plans we have started to put in place. Additionally his influence and standing in the professional game will ensure our playing squad is of a required standard to take on these emerging opportunities. We all welcome Westy on board and can’t wait to start working with him.’
