Christ College, Brecon v Crawshay’s Rugby Club Youth UNDER 18 XV
Wednesday 20thNovember 2019
On a windswept, cold but dry autumnal afternoon Crawshay’s fielded a young team of players from as far afield as Monmouth School in the east and Ysgol Preseli in the west against the previously unbeaten Christ College 1stXV. After last year’s fixture when Crawshay’s made a remarkable come back from a 33 point half time deficit to snatch victory 33 – 35 it was clear from the off that the College team were determined to avenge that defeat. The college side started strongly with No 8 and Captain James Roberts and centre Louis Hayes to the fore. The scratch Crawshay’s side initially found the pressure and organisation of the College side too strong and after a considerable period of pressure near the Crawshay’s line the College were able to score their first unconverted try. Just before half time the invitational side were beginning to gel and were able after some powerful scrummaging and sustained forward play were able to go over for a converted try from Joe Gough of Coleg Y Cymoedd / Merthyr RFC.

The second half saw Crawshay’s return to the field inspired by coaches Nigel Meek, Jon Hawker and Jon Watkins with renewed vigour and determination to move the ball at every opportunity in true Crawshay’s style. The College defended well initially but as our squad became more cohesive we were able to score a further three excellent tries through Geraint Edwards of Seven Sisters RFC, Ben Evans of Ysgol Bro Dinefwr and Joe Watts of Bridgend College with only one converted try in response from the college side. There were a number of notable performances in a fine squad performance from outside half Gethin Rosser of Monmouth School who kicked 2 conversions and a penalty, hooker Harvey Williams of Llandovery College who with his front row colleagues were very powerful and greatly aided by all of their fellow forwards, backs Joe Watts, Geraint Edwards and Osian Hill of Ysgol Preseli who made some exciting runs with the ball after coming off the bench brought the game to life in the final quarter to secure a victory against the young and talented College outfit. The afternoon was another excellent showpiece of junior rugby and all in attendance enjoyed the opportunity to watch our young players put together an excellent performance against the strong College XV.
